What to Expect After Your Pet’s Surgery
Like human surgeries, cat and dog surgeries require plenty of time after for healing and recovery. At Carey Animal Hospital, we provide every pet parent with detailed post-op instructions to follow at home. These instructions typically include:
- Keeping your pet calm and reasonably confined to prevent jumping, roughhousing, and over exertion
- Regularly checking your pet’s sutures to make sure they’re clean, dry, and not showing any signs of swelling, hardening, redness, or infection
- Making sure your pet is eating and drinking normally
- Administering prescribed pain medication to your pet as needed to reduce discomfort
Is Surgery Painful for Pets?
Your companion can expect to feel some discomfort after their surgery, but we do all we can to keep that discomfort to a minimum. Pets are given pain relief right before their surgery and will go home with oral medication as well. Pain can slow a pet’s recovery and cause other problems, which is why we place special emphasis on pain management and relief for our patients.
